MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Sunshine State Conference regular season champions received plenty of well-deserved, individual recognition on Thursday, as four players landed on the All-SSC First Team. Additionally, head coach John Constable was honored as the league's Coach of the Year for the first time in his career.
 
Along with their first-team selections, Bailey Corbin and Adanna Edwards were named the SSC's Defensive Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year. Corbin's defensive accolade marks the first for the program since Cydney Niedermeyer took home the honor in 2015, while Edwards gives the Sharks their second straight Freshman of the Year after Hannah Christophe collected the award just a year ago. Joining Corbin and Edwards on the first team are midfielders Emma Heikkila and Monica Orteu. The Sharks' four first-teamers tie them with Barry for the most across the league.
 
"I am happy for the players," said Constable. "They have stepped up and performed very well this season. Bailey has been rock solid defensively and has scored some huge goals. Monica has led our midfield, Emma has produced numerous huge goals and assists for us, and Adanna has been a constant threat to opposing defenses. 
Overall, we are all very humbled to be recognized, as the standard of play and coaching throughout the conference is very high." 
 
In his third season at the helm, Constable has already guided the Sharks to the program's first-ever outright SSC regular season championship, and has his team atop the NCAA South Region standings just four days before the NCAA Tournament field is announced. At 12-3-1 on the year, 2017 marks the third straight season in which Nova Southeastern has reached the 12-win total.
 
"Although the award is a personal one, I really consider this as an another team award," Constable added. "It reflects the good work of everyone, and I am fortunate I have the players and staff alongside me that I do. Plus, I certainly am not the only one coaching as Cory (Harbinson) plays a huge role and Reggie (Pierre-Jerome) does his part with the keepers." 
 
Fittingly, Corbin earns the SSC Defensive Player of the Year honor just three days after being selected as the latest SSC Defensive Player of the Week. The senior has proven to be the leader on the backline of the league's most winningest team, while also picking up the slack on offensive set pieces. In 14 starts this season, Corbin has recorded four goals, including the game-winner in Friday's championship-clincher versus Tampa.
 
Edwards has made an instant impact in her first season as a Shark, tallying 12 points on five goals and two assists. The Miami native waited less than six minutes into her collegiate debut to find the back of the net against North Alabama before adding her first career multi-goal effort in the ensuing match against Felician. Her five goals this fall rank among the Top-10 in the league, with two of those coming as game-winners.
 
Just a sophomore, Heikkila has spearheaded the SSC's top scoring offense by notching a team-high six goals in only 12 matches. Five of Heikkila's scores have come against SSC competition, with the sixth registered against North Alabama, the south region's fourth-ranked team. Her goal and point totals are both among the Top-5 in the SSC  
 
Orteu, meanwhile, has provided leadership and consistency in the middle throughout the season for the Sharks. The senior from Barcelona has tallied at least one point in eight of her 15 starts, amassing four goals and a team-best five assists. Orteu also turned in her best match on the biggest stage to date, recording a goal and an assist in the Sharks' crucial 2-0 win over Tampa last Friday.
 
Barry's Christy Grimshaw and Amanda Traynor were picked as the SSC's Player of the Year and Offensive Player of the Year, respectively.
